Truck Drivers in Hadramout Launch Open-Ended Strike Protesting Illegal Levies

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

Commercial truck drivers have staged a protest sit-in in the city of Seiyun, Hadramout governorate, on the international route linking Oman and Yemen. They are protesting what they describe as illegal levies imposed by the airport checkpoint.

In an official statement, the drivers clarified that the checkpoint forces them to pay 150,000 Yemeni riyals per truck as illegal transit fees, which has sparked widespread rejection among them. According to the statement, many drivers have refused to pay these “levies,” leading to the stoppage of dozens of trucks and disrupting traffic on this vital route.

The protesters confirmed they have begun an open-ended strike until the local authority in Hadramout and the security agencies intervene to stop these practices and remove the barriers hindering truck movement, which are causing significant economic damage.

Hadramout governorate has recently witnessed an escalation in problems related to the imposition of irregular fees on commercial transport routes. This has exacerbated tensions in trade and transit movement on the international route, threatening the stability of vital supply flows between Yemen and Oman.

Local sources reported that the drivers are continuing to escalate their protests until their demands are met, amid official calls to resolve the crisis before the economic losses from the halted truck movement worsen.
