UN Warns of Escalating Houthi Violations Against Its Staff in Yemen

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The United Nations has issued an official statement, delivered by its spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, expressing deep concern over the ongoing practices by the Houthi group in Yemen.

The statement noted a growing number of personnel arbitrarily detained in Houthi-controlled areas, with the total number reaching 53 staff members since 2021.

The spokesperson pointed out that these actions also include the seizure of UN property and working premises in Houthi-controlled areas.

The statement warned that these measures seriously undermine the international organization’s ability to deliver essential humanitarian aid to Yemeni citizens in need.

António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, reiterated his demands for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained international organization staff and diplomats.

Guterres stressed the importance of all parties adhering to the commitment to protect humanitarian organization staff and their property, in accordance with international laws and treaties that guarantee diplomatic immunity.

The organization clarified that it continues to exert all possible efforts to ensure the safe release of the detained staff, while remaining committed to supporting the Yemeni people and their pursuit of stability and lasting peace.
