Yemeni Journalists’ Syndicate Condemns Israeli Strike on 26 September Newspaper, Calls It a War Crime

The Yemeni Journalists’ Syndicate on Friday strongly condemned the Israeli airstrike that targeted the headquarters of 26 September newspaper in the capital Sanaa on Wednesday evening, killing and injuring several staff members, while others remain missing under the rubble.

In a statement, the syndicate said that “the attack on media institutions and residential neighborhoods, which left dozens of victims and caused widespread destruction of facilities and homes, constitutes a war crime and a flagrant violation of international laws and conventions that guarantee the protection of media outlets and freedom of expression during conflicts.”

According to initial figures, the strike killed a number of journalists and media workers, including syndicate member Abdulaziz al-Sheikh, along with Abbas al-Deilami, Yousuf Shams al-Din, Abdullah Mahdi al-Bahri, Mohammed al-Umaisi, Abdullah al-Harazi, Murad Halboob al-Faqih, Ali Naji Said al-Shara’i, Ali Mohammed al-Aqil, and Jamal al-Adhi. Others were wounded, including syndicate member Mansour al-Ansi.

The syndicate urged all international organizations concerned with press freedom and freedom of expression to condemn the attack, pressure for protection of journalists and media institutions, and ensure a safe environment for free expression. It also called for accountability for violations against the press in Yemen. The syndicate expressed its condolences to the families of the victims and the media community, wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
