EU condemns the Houthis’ arbitrary arrests of UN staff in Yemen

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The European Union has expressed its strong condemnation of the arbitrary arrests of 11 United Nations staff members by the Houthis in Yemen, affirming its support for the statement made by the UN Secretary-General on September 1, 2025.

The EU stressed that these arrests, along with the seizure of UN property and attempts to storm the organization’s headquarters in Sana’a, constitute a clear violation of international law and the Vienna Conventions, which protect the inviolability of diplomatic premises.

It affirmed the necessity of the immediate release of all detained employees, calling for respect for the UN’s role and the sanctity of its premises in promoting peace and stability in Yemen.

It also reiterated its demand for an end to all threats and attacks targeting freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, calling for the safety of vital sea lanes that are a main artery for international trade.
