FAO Warns of Severe Weather Fluctuations in Yemen

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has warned of ongoing weather fluctuations in Yemen, with forecasts indicating increased rainfall in the southern highlands.
Starting from the second half of April 2025, a slight rise in rainfall levels is expected across various southern governorates.
This increase in rainfall may help improve soil moisture and support crop growth; however, this positive effect may not be uniform across all regions.
In governorates such as Ibb, FAO forecasts rainfall ranging between 60 and 100 mm, with a gradual decrease in surrounding areas.
On the other hand, increased rainfall could hinder agricultural activities in some areas and delay crop development.
Regarding temperatures, the organization predicts a significant rise, exceeding 40°C in Hadhramaut and Al-Mahrah by mid-April, raising the risk of heat-related disasters.
Meanwhile, coastal governorates such as Hajjah, Al-Hudaidah, and Taiz are expected to experience a slight increase in temperatures, although still surpassing seasonal averages.
FAO noted that these climatic fluctuations could damage newly planted crops, reducing the benefits of increased rainfall in some areas. The rise in temperatures and persistent drought conditions could also lead to greater water stress on crops.
