The Yemeni government has expressed its solidarity with Saudi Arabia following Riyadh’s announcement that it had thwarted drone attacks which it said were launched from Iraqi territory and targeted oil facilities, describing such attacks as an escalation that threatens regional security.
In a statement, Yemen’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said the Yemeni government stands alongside Saudi Arabia in confronting threats to its security and stability, reaffirming its support for the measures the Kingdom is taking to protect its territory and vital facilities.
The ministry accused Iran of being behind the attacks through armed groups loyal to it, arguing that such activities contribute to regional instability and threaten international shipping and the global economy.
The statement added that Yemen has been among the countries most affected by Iranian support for the Houthi group, saying this has, according to the ministry, prolonged the conflict, worsened the humanitarian crisis, and enabled continued attacks on civilian infrastructure while threatening navigation in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
Yemen’s Foreign Ministry called on the international community and the UN Security Council to take firmer action against what it described as Iran’s destabilizing activities and to prevent the territory of any country from being used as a launching point for attacks against other states, in order to strengthen regional security and stability.
Earlier, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense announced that its air defense forces had intercepted and destroyed several drones that attempted to target oil facilities in the Eastern Province and the Riyadh region during the past several hours.
