Yemen Calls For Protecting The Right Of Least Developed Countries To Access Global Markets

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Republic of Yemen has called on the World Trade Organization to protect the right of least developed countries to access global markets, affirming its commitment to actively engaging in shaping a more balanced and fair international trading system.

During Yemen’s speech at the WTO Ministerial Conference, the Minister of Industry and Trade in the Yemeni government, Dr. Mohammed Al-Ashwal, warned against imposing additional obligations that could limit the ability of least developed countries to access markets, reiterating Yemen’s full support for the package dedicated to these countries.

Al-Ashwal pointed to the importance of reinforcing the principles of transparency, simplifying procedures, improving the business environment in developing countries, and taking into account developmental disparities by allowing flexibility in implementing commitments, as well as strengthening technical support programs and building institutional capacities.

The Yemeni minister also called for extending transition periods for graduating countries, enhancing technology transfer, and providing the necessary funding for capacity-building programs, in addition to activating the principle of special and differential treatment to ensure sustainable and inclusive development.

He further noted that Yemen’s participation comes within coordinated efforts with developing country blocs, contributing to more balanced and fair outcomes and enhancing the integration of the national economy into the global economy.

The conference agenda discussed issues such as investment facilitation for development, emerging issues in agricultural trade, and the package directed at least developed countries, as part of international efforts to enhance the effectiveness of the multilateral trading system.
