Study: Eastern Yemen Is the Heart of the Conflict and the New Center of Gravity

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Mokha Center for Studies has revealed the growing importance of Yemen’s eastern governorates, which have come to represent the center of gravity in the country’s geopolitical equation.

The study highlighted the strategic location of these governorates, along with their natural resources and extensive coastline, making them a key focal point in the balance of local and regional conflict.

It noted that control over these areas was not merely a fleeting military move, but rather a fundamental shift that reshaped the priorities of political and military actors.

The study pointed out that the escalation led by the Southern Transitional Council with Emirati support in Hadramawt and Al-Mahrah resulted in an unprecedented political and military crisis, prompting the Presidential Leadership Council to take decisive decisions aimed at regulating the political and military landscape.

It added that recent developments have gone beyond military confrontation to reach the core of the Yemeni state, affecting the legal status of authority and the unity of the territory, which directly impacts the future of the political process and paths toward settlement in the country.

The study emphasized that the pivotal role of these governorates is linked to preserving the geographic cohesion of the state amid intense regional competition over influence and interests, noting that the repercussions of these transformations remain open to several scenarios tied to the evolving positions of local and regional forces in the coming phase.
