A Humanitarian Step… UN Envoy Announces Agreement to End the Suffering of Detainees’ Families in Yemen

On Tuesday, the UN Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, announced an agreement had been reached between the Yemeni government and the Houthi group regarding the release of detainees. This came after intensive meetings lasting eleven days in the Sultanate of Oman.
The office of the UN Envoy explained in an official statement that the meetings, jointly chaired by the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy and the International Committee of the Red Cross, resulted in an agreement concerning the new phase of releasing detainees from all parties involved in the conflict.
The meeting was part of the work of the Supervisory Committee tasked with implementing the detainee release agreement, which was established based on the Stockholm Agreement, aimed at supporting the parties in fulfilling their commitments to release all conflict-related detainees.
This was the tenth meeting of the Supervisory Committee. Grundberg stressed the significant humanitarian importance of the progress made on the detainee release file, welcoming the meeting’s outcomes.
The UN Envoy also expressed his deep gratitude to the Sultanate of Oman for generously hosting the meetings and its continuous support for the efforts of the Office of the Special Envoy. He noted that the new agreement is a positive and important step to alleviate the suffering of detainees and their families across various regions of Yemen.
