UAE in the Background… Reports Uncover Abu Dhabi’s Role in Empowering Armed Militias in South Yemen

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Recent press reports indicate that a coalition of political groups and militias affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council (STC) has succeeded in seizing control of the entire territory of the former South Yemen, with the implicit approval of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

According to the French newspaper “Le Monde,” Southern separatists have been able to extend their influence since the beginning of last December over all areas that constituted the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen prior to the reunification of Yemen in 1990.

The coalition also managed to seize control of the governorates of Hadramout and Al Mahrah, two of the most important eastern governorates in the country. This takeover included the capture of several strategic oil fields, in addition to a border extending 600 kilometers with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the entire shared border with the Sultanate of Oman.

The newspaper indicated that the United Arab Emirates has been training and arming Southern separatists since 2016, contributing to the enhancement of their power and their ability to control these vast areas.
