Trader Pressure in Sana’a Forces Houthis to Temporarily Retreat from Import Ban Decision

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Houthi group has made a limited retreat from its comprehensive ban and prohibition on importing a number of goods. It has allowed goods already present in customs ports under its control to enter areas under its authority, after months of detention.

The Houthi-appointed Acting Prime Minister, Muhammad Miftah, announced today during a meeting with traders and investors in Sana’a, that goods currently at customs ports would be permitted entry, while the ban decision would apply to any new goods.

This retreat came after protests, strikes, and strongly-worded statements from traders in recent periods, which created significant pressure on the Houthis, leading to a temporary step back to contain rising discontent among capital owners and traders.

The Houthi group had announced in mid-current year a decision for a complete ban and prohibition on importing a list of goods under the guise of protecting local production, and began implementing the decision last November.
