Hadramowt Governor Warns of Urgent Challenges Amid Rising Political Tensions

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The Governor of Hadramowt , Salem Ahmed Al-Khanbashi, warned on Monday that the governorate is facing thorny issues that require urgent solutions, stressing that the files of basic services, security, and normalizing conditions top the local authority’s priorities. This comes amid rising political tensions and attempts to pressure the legitimate authority.

The Governor’s statements were made during an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Bureau in the city of Al-Mukalla, attended by Local Council Secretary-General Saleh Al-Omqi, the governorate’s undersecretaries, the commander of the Second Military Region, and the Director of Security and Police.

Al-Khanbashi affirmed the local authority’s keenness to enhance security, stability, and improve services, calling for job discipline, facilitating citizens’ transactions, and seriously addressing reports from the Central Organization for Control and Auditing to close avenues for corruption.

He also stressed the importance of dividing the Executive Bureau members into specialized committees to raise performance efficiency, noting that the accumulation of financial debts represents a challenge that requires resolution according to a clear timeline. He called for concerted efforts and strengthening institutional work with a team spirit.

In a related context, the Governor urged media outlets and all segments of society to promote the values of tolerance and coexistence and reject inflammatory rhetoric in disputes, considering responsible discourse an essential element in protecting the governorate’s social fabric and overcoming current challenges.

These official moves coincided with escalating political tensions in the governorate. The Southern Transitional Council (STC) organized a demonstration in front of the Governor’s residence in Al-Mukalla, where protesters demanded his removal due to his stance rejecting the presence of non-local forces within Hadramawt.

The demonstrators raised slogans calling for the Governor’s change, and some even raised the secessionist flag. This sparked widespread reactions and rejection from a large segment of the governorate’s population, who affirm their support for national unity and the stability of local institutions.

Observers believe these protests are part of a continuous escalation by the STC to pressure the legitimate authorities in Hadramawt and Shabwah, while the local authority continues to affirm its commitment to the citizens’ choices and protecting security and stability in the region.
