United Nations Warns of Worsening Acute Food Security Crisis in Yemen and Other Countries

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have warned of a worsening acute food insecurity crisis in Yemen and several other countries, threatening the lives of millions of people.

According to the joint report by the two organizations, families are increasingly being forced to skip essential meals or sell their possessions to secure food, while in some cases, the crisis has reached emergency and famine levels — posing a direct threat to human lives, especially children suffering from weakened immunity due to malnutrition.

The report stated that armed conflicts and violence are the main drivers of hunger in these areas, along with rising food prices, fragile economic conditions, and climate fluctuations such as floods and droughts.

It also noted that a lack of funding limits the ability of humanitarian actors to provide the necessary aid.

The FAO and WFP called for urgent action through the provision of sustained food assistance and rapid interventions to mitigate the crisis’s effects, in addition to investing in programs that strengthen families’ resilience to ongoing crises and curb the worsening hunger.
