FAO Launches Initiative to Enhance Fisheries and Support Fishermen in Yemen’s Al-Mahra

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced the launch of a new project supporting sustainable fisheries in Yemen’s Al-Mahra Governorate, aimed at improving the livelihoods of local fishermen and enhancing food security in the region.
With support from the Global Environment Facility, FAO handed over fish landing sites in the Damqut and Hawf areas of Al-Mahra Governorate in preparation for their rehabilitation as part of the Resilient and Sustainable Rural Livelihoods Project in Yemen. This step aims to enable coastal communities to improve fishing methods and sustainably enhance their marine resources.
In a statement on its official X platform account, the organization stated that the initiative seeks to enhance the capacities of local fishermen and develop fisheries in a way that ensures the preservation of natural resources and improves the economic situation of households relying on fishing as their main source of income.
This project is part of international efforts to support sustainable development in Yemen, where FAO focuses on strengthening rural livelihoods and combating hunger by improving the effective and responsible use of natural resources.
