Two Smuggling Ships Carrying Chinese Communication Equipment Seized West of Aden

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
On Saturday evening, Yemeni Coast Guard forces managed to seize two wooden vessels carrying about 250 tons of various goods while sailing approximately 70 nautical miles west of Aden Port.
Official sources explained that the two ships had come from Djibouti Port and were headed toward Ras al-Ara in Lahj Governorate, a non-authorized landing point often used for ongoing smuggling operations.
In an official statement from the Coast Guard, it was reported that 14 boxes containing advanced telecommunications equipment from the Chinese company Huawei were found onboard. These items were not listed in the shipping manifest, constituting a clear violation of maritime and customs regulations in force.
The statement confirmed that the equipment was intended for fiber-optic networks and telecommunications infrastructure, which require official permits for transport and installation within Yemeni territory.
The two vessels were referred to Aden Port for thorough inspection, and the suspects were detained for legal procedures and investigation — part of the Presidential Leadership Council’s broader efforts to implement comprehensive economic reforms.
The Coast Guard Authority stated that inspection operations will continue in coordination with relevant security agencies to safeguard Yemen’s territorial waters and prevent smuggling activities that threaten the nation’s maritime security and economic stability. The authority reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the law and protecting the national economy.
