Yemen Monitor / Monitoring Unit / Exclusive

On Sunday, the Central Bank of Yemen issued new measures to suspend and revoke the licenses of three exchange establishments and companies, bringing the total number of exchange entities targeted by the bank since July 23 to 53.

The Central Bank Governor announced the revocation of the license granted to Ahmed Al-Qadhi Cash Exchange and the closure of its headquarters. He also revoked the licenses of branches of the following exchange companies: Al-Shuibi Exchange – Al-Mansoura and Salah bin Awad Exchange – Sheikh Othman.

According to the decisions, these measures were based on confirmed violations documented in field inspection reports issued by the Banking Supervision Sector and in accordance with relevant laws, foremost among them the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Law.

According to Yemen Monitor’s Monitoring Unit, the suspension or revocation of licenses affected 53 entities in total, as follows: 43 suspensions and 10 revocations.

  • Number of companies: 11
  • Number of establishments: 35
  • Number of company branches: 6
  • Number of agents: 1

The internationally recognized government has been carrying out a strict campaign to bring financial institutions in Yemen under control and ensure their independence from the influence of the Houthi group.

To that end, the Central Bank in Aden has issued decisions to suspend and revoke the licenses of several exchange companies and establishments due to confirmed violations in banking supervision reports. These measures are part of efforts to combat illegal activities, most notably currency speculation, which negatively impacts economic stability and citizens’ livelihoods.

These measures have already contributed to a relative stabilization of the local currency exchange rate in government-controlled areas, where the U.S. dollar has stabilized at around 1,617 rials for buying and 1,632 rials for selling, and the Saudi riyal at 425 rials for buying and 428 rials for selling.
