Yemen’s Central Bank Announces the Start of Operations for the Executive Team of the National Committee for Regulating and Financing Imports

Yemen Monitor / Aden / Special:

The Central Bank of Yemen in Aden announced on Sunday that the Executive Team of the National Committee for Regulating and Financing Imports has officially started its duties, beginning with the disbursement and coverage of requests from banks and currency exchange companies.

These requests are being processed according to the rates set by the committee. The exchange rate for the US dollar has been set at 1632.80 Yemeni riyals, while the Saudi riyal’s rate is 428 Yemeni riyals.

The national committee has called on merchants and importers to submit their import requests through accredited banks and currency exchange companies to ensure they are reviewed and decided upon according to the mechanism approved by the committee.

Late last week, the National Committee for Regulating and Financing Imports, appointed by the internationally recognized Yemeni government, approved restricting the import of 25 essential goods to commercial banks. This move aims to regulate import operations, control foreign trade financing, and direct it through the official banking system.

The goods whose import financing has been restricted by the bank are: “petroleum derivatives, wheat, rice, plastics and their derivatives, vegetable oils, medicines, food preparations, rebar, frozen chicken, sugar, dairy products, papers and cardboard, cheese, industrial iron, tiles and marble, charcoal, cement, wood, air conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators, solar panels, fertilizers, flour, corn, plywood, and industrial vegetable oils.”

Ahmed Ghaleb, the Governor of the Central Bank and head of the Committee for Regulating and Financing Imports, noted that the remaining goods not on the specified list, which was agreed upon by the committee, can be financed through other sources under the full knowledge and supervision of the Committee for Regulating and Financing Imports.
