Calls to Appoint Habreesh as Hadhramaut Governor Amid Protests and Service Collapse

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Social media activists circulated a letter issued by a group of tribal leaders and dignitaries from Hadhramaut nominating political figure Issam Habreesh Al-Kathiri for the position of governor, amid worsening conditions and deepening public suffering in the governorate.

The letter, addressed to the head of the Presidential Leadership Council, highlighted the deterioration of public services and the ongoing administrative vacuum caused by internal power struggles within the local authority. It warned of the consequences such instability could have on the governorate’s security and the well-being of its residents.

The signatories urged the Council President to urgently intervene to end the political deadlock and make a decision that would restore administrative cohesion to Hadhramaut. They noted that Habreesh’s nomination had come with the consensus of numerous tribal and social leaders from various districts, citing his competence, experience, and proven record in managing the governorate and defending its interests.

The signatories stressed that the current situation threatens social peace and requires urgent decisions, appealing to the Presidential Leadership to swiftly take necessary steps to prevent a total collapse.

This initiative comes amid an ongoing wave of public protests in Hadhramaut, now in its fourth consecutive day. Demonstrations have spread from the city of Mukalla to other towns including Al-Qatn, Tarim, Al-Raydah, and Qusai’ar, reflecting growing popular anger.

Protesters are demanding improvements in basic services—especially the electricity sector, which suffers frequent outages despite the governorate’s abundant oil resources. Demonstrators are calling for the dismissal of the current governor and the implementation of effective measures to improve living conditions and public services.
