Guterres: Houthi Attacks Violate Freedom of Navigation in the Red Sea

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

The United Nations Secretary-General has strongly condemned the Houthis’ resumed attacks on civilian vessels transiting the Red Sea, particularly those that occurred between July 6 and 8.

Antonio Guterres stated in a statement attributed to his spokesperson that the sinking of the vessels “Magic Seas” and “Eternity Sea,” along with the deaths of at least four crew members and injuries to others, represents a new and dangerous escalation in this vital waterway.

With reports of at least 15 crew members missing, the Secretary-General called on the Houthis not to take any actions that would impede ongoing search and rescue operations for the missing crew.

Guterres said that these actions, in addition to being an unacceptable assault on the safety and security of seafarers, also violate freedom of navigation, endanger maritime transport, and pose a serious risk of significant environmental, economic, and humanitarian damage to an already fragile coastal environment.

The Secretary-General stressed the necessity for all parties to respect international law at all times, also emphasizing the need for full compliance with UN Security Council Resolution 2768 (2025) concerning Houthi attacks on commercial vessels.

Guterres stated that the United Nations remains committed to continuing its efforts to achieve broader de-escalation in the region, as well as maintaining communication with Yemeni, regional, and international parties to secure a sustainable and peaceful resolution to the conflict in Yemen.
