Washington: Houthis Abducted Survivors of Red Sea Ship Attack

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The U.S. Embassy in Yemen has accused the Houthi group of abducting several sailors who survived the armed attack on the cargo ship Eternity C in the Red Sea, just days after their colleagues were killed and the vessel completely sank.

In an official statement published on its platforms, the U.S. Embassy demanded the “immediate and unconditional release” of the abducted sailors, describing the act as a “terrorist operation” that reinforces the justification for the Houthis’ designation as a terrorist organization.

The U.S. State Department had previously confirmed the deaths of three sailors in a double Houthi attack targeting two commercial vessels, Magic Seas and Eternity C, calling the assaults “unprovoked, terrorist, and Iranian-backed.”

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that the attack led to the complete sinking of the Magic Seas and the loss of its cargo, emphasizing that the incident highlights the ongoing threat posed by the Houthis to freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, as well as to regional maritime and economic security.

She stressed that the United States will continue to take all necessary measures to protect international shipping from repeated Houthi attacks, which she described as a direct threat to regional stability and the safety of vital waterways.

These statements come amid a sharp increase in Houthi attacks in the Red Sea in recent months, which the group claims target ships linked to “Israel.” However, Washington maintains that the Houthis now threaten global trade and the safety of innocent civilians, a concern echoed in recent UN reports.
