Aden Hosts New Talks on Prospects for Resuming Yemen’s Political Process

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Yemeni Prime Minister Salem Saleh bin Buraik received UN Special Envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg on Tuesday in the interim capital, Aden, for discussions focused on the latest political developments and international efforts to end the conflict and achieve peace in Yemen.

At the start of the meeting, Grundberg reviewed the outcomes of his recent regional and international engagements and ongoing communications aimed at breaking the political deadlock. He expressed hope for tangible progress that could ease the suffering of the Yemeni people and pave the way for renewed negotiations.

For his part, Prime Minister bin Buraik reaffirmed the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government’s commitment to the path of peace and their full support for all UN and regional efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive, just, and sustainable peace based on the three agreed-upon references, chiefly UN Security Council Resolution 2216.

Bin Buraik emphasized that any realistic approach to achieving peace must begin with addressing the root causes of the conflict, foremost among them ending the Houthi coup and confronting what he described as the “destructive approach” of the Iran-backed militia, which continues to undermine security and stability in Yemen and the wider region.

The meeting also addressed ongoing Houthi violations, including the detention of UN staff and workers from humanitarian and diplomatic organizations, as well as the group’s continued obstruction of relief efforts, in blatant defiance of international humanitarian law.

The Prime Minister expressed appreciation for the UN envoy’s role and his team’s efforts to break the political stalemate and find a peaceful resolution to the crisis that would alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people.

Grundberg, for his part, reiterated the United Nations’ commitment to continuing its efforts to achieve a comprehensive political settlement that delivers concrete results on humanitarian and economic fronts and brings an end to the suffering of Yemenis.
