WHO: Significant Increase in Cholera Cases in Yemen

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Recent data released by the WHO shows a significant deterioration in Yemen’s health situation, with the country experiencing a new wave of epidemic outbreaks.

In its latest report, the organization confirmed more than 18,000 suspected cases during the first five months of the current year, with a notable increase in deaths associated with this epidemic.

According to official statistics, 18,286 new cases of cholera and acute watery diarrhea were recorded between January 1 and May 25, 2025, along with 10 confirmed deaths.

The report noted an alarming acceleration in the spread rate, with infections in May jumping to 5,369 cases, compared to only 1,352 cases in the preceding month of April.

The data indicates that Yemen now ranks fifth globally in cholera prevalence, ahead of many countries suffering from similar health crises.

This classification places Yemen after South Sudan, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Angola on the list of countries most affected by this dangerous epidemic.
