Popular Uproar in Mukalla, Eastern Yemen, Over Electricity Collapse and Soaring Temperatures

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Popular anger has intensified in the city of Mukalla, the capital of Hadramout governorate in eastern Yemen, as dozens of protesters took to the streets to denounce the collapse of electricity services amidst a severe heatwave gripping the region.

The city witnessed scattered protests in recent hours, with demonstrators blocking several main streets using burning tires and stones, paralyzing traffic in some vital neighborhoods.

Protesters chanted angry slogans demanding that local authorities and the government put an end to the citizens’ suffering. They stated that the deterioration of electricity service is no longer bearable, especially with prolonged power outages amid unprecedentedly high temperatures.

Eyewitnesses said the protests erupted after a significant reduction in operating hours over the past few days, exacerbating the suffering of residents in a city that relies heavily on electricity to mitigate the summer heat.

This popular escalation in Mukalla comes at a time when most areas under the control of the Yemeni government are experiencing a near-complete collapse in electricity services, amidst a lack of effective government solutions and growing public discontent in various governorates.
