Al-Alimi and Bin Buraik Return to Aden Amid Escalating Public Protests

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, and Prime Minister Salem Bin Buraik returned to the interim capital, Aden, on Sunday from Russia, as the city witnesses a surge in public protests over worsening economic conditions and deteriorating basic services.

Their return follows an official visit to Moscow, during which Al-Alimi held what were described as “fruitful” talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and senior officials from the State Duma and Russian government. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of economy and energy.

A source at the Office of the Presidency stated that the Council Chairman, in coordination with other council members, will continue efforts to improve government performance in addressing the deepening economic and humanitarian crisis through a comprehensive reform plan.

The source added that Al-Alimi intends to hold a series of meetings with government leadership, local authority heads, and relevant agencies to coordinate policies and plans aimed at improving the state’s public revenues, curbing economic collapse, and alleviating the service-related hardships—especially in the electricity and water sectors.

The source also emphasized that the political leadership prioritizes support for the battle to restore state institutions, alongside activating government operations and improving responsiveness to citizens’ needs.

This return comes as Aden, Taiz, and other Yemeni cities are experiencing a wave of public protests in response to the decline in basic services and continued power and water outages, amid growing calls for urgent government intervention to end the worsening suffering of the population.
