Houthis Shell Residential Areas and Blow Up Civilian Homes in Taiz, Southwestern Yemen

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

On Saturday evening, areas in the north and south of Taiz province witnessed a serious escalation by Iran-backed Houthi militias, who shelled residential neighborhoods with mortar fire and committed the crime of blowing up a civilian’s home in Al-Shaqb area—further deepening the suffering of civilians amid the absence of any international deterrent.

Local sources told the Yemeni Ministry of Defense’s website September Net that “Houthi militias heavily bombarded Al-Zanouj neighborhood and areas surrounding the Air Defense Camp in northern Taiz using mortar shells, which landed on civilian homes, causing panic among residents—especially as the militias continue to target densely populated areas.”

The violations were not limited to northern Taiz. In Al-Shaqb area of Saber Al-Mawadim district (south of the governorate), the Houthis blew up the home of citizen Majid Ali Mohammed Ghaleb using powerful explosive devices.

Local sources indicated that the attack was carried out from the militias’ position at “Al-Saliheen Hill,” which they have turned into a military base for shelling nearby villages.

According to the local human rights monitoring committee in Al-Shaqb, today’s crime raises the number of homes destroyed by the militias in the area to 125 since September 2015 through May 2025. This alarming figure highlights the ongoing policy of collective punishment against civilians and the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in the governorate.
