Activists Demand Release of Singer Khalil Farhan Detained by Houthis

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
Human rights reports indicate that Yemeni Singer Khalil Farhan is currently detained in a prison in Dhamar city, which is under Houthi control, on charges related to performing national songs at wedding parties.
His arrest sparked a wave of angry reactions among human rights activists and cultural circles, who called for his release and an end to arrests targeting artists and creators in areas controlled by the armed group.
In his commentary, writer and journalist Ahmed Al-Salami pointed out that Farhan amazes audiences by performing national songs during wedding parties, which contributes to their awareness of the reality of their hijacked homeland.
He considered that Farhan’s “crime” lies in his search for the Yemenis’ homeland through his songs, which seems to frighten the Houthis.
On another note, singer Taha Al-Rajawi commented on the situation, saying: “In Houthi areas, the artist is arrested because he plays for Yemen and sings for the republic.” He affirmed that the armed group fears art because it contributes to awakening the consciousness of peoples, admitting that they exaggerate their fears of the impact of art.
Al-Rajawi also called for an end to the arrest campaigns against artists, stressing that art reflects the spirit of the nation and that suppressing it is evidence of the groups’ fear of people’s awareness and awakening.
The case of artist Khalil Farhan, along with other detained creatives, is considered an embodiment of the suppression of cultural and artistic freedoms in areas administered by the Houthi group, amid local and international demands for their release and respect for the rights to opinion and expression.
