Grundberg Calls for Transparent Investigation into Airstrike on Detention Center in Saada

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, expressed deep concern over the airstrike that targeted a detention center in Saada Governorate (northern Yemen), which reportedly resulted in dozens of African migrants being killed or injured.

In a statement issued by his office, Grundberg noted that he is taking into account the U.S. announcement regarding the launch of an investigation into the incident.

He called on all parties to take the necessary measures to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, and to ensure accountability for every civilian life lost.

The UN envoy stressed the importance of prioritizing de-escalation, exercising restraint, and focusing on efforts aimed at reaching a negotiated and peaceful future for Yemen. He emphasized that civilian protection must be at the core of any future political process.

The Houthi group said on Monday that the number of casualties from the U.S. airstrike on a shelter for undocumented migrants in the city of Saada had reached 125.

According to the group, the strike resulted in the deaths of 60 migrants and injuries to 65 others—figures that remain preliminary.
