Al-Alimi Meets Ahmed bin Breik for the First Time Since the Dissolution of the Transitional Council

Yemen Monitor/ Newsroom:
The Head of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Muhammad Al-Alimi, met on Wednesday with the former Governor of Hadramawt, Major General Ahmed Said bin Breik, to offer his condolences on the death of his brother, Major General Muhammad Said bin Breik, the former head of the National Security Bureau.
According to the official Yemen News Agency, Al-Alimi renewed his condolences to the family of the deceased during the meeting, praising his national career and contributions to the military and security institutions, and emphasizing that with his passing, Yemen has lost one of its leadership cadres who held a number of civil and security positions over the past decades.
For his part, Ahmed bin Breik expressed his appreciation for the sentiments of the President of the Presidential Leadership Council and his consolation to the family of the deceased.
The meeting gains political importance as it is the first to bring together Al-Alimi and Ahmed bin Breik since the developments witnessed on the southern scene over the past months, particularly in the governorates of Hadramout and Al-Mahrah, and the accompanying shifts in the man’s positions, most notably participating in the dissolution of the Southern Transitional Council, of which he was the Vice President.
Bin Breik is known for his supportive stances on the option of secession and his repeated criticism of the legitimate authority over the past years. However, observers believe that his political discourse has recently witnessed a degree of de-escalation compared to his previous positions.
The meeting also comes at a time when Bin Breik’s name has emerged among the participants in the Southern Dialogue, expected to be held in the coming period under Saudi sponsorship, which aims to bridge viewpoints between different southern components and discuss arrangements for the next phase.
Observers believe that the meeting, despite its social nature related to offering condolences, reflects at the same time the continuation of communication channels between the legitimate leadership and active southern figures, in light of political movements on the Yemeni scene to rearrange the ranks of the Yemeni legitimacy in the face of the Houthi coup.
