Yemen’s cultural community lost one of its leading figures on Saturday with the passing of Yemeni writer and literary figure Saeed Awlaqi, who died in the temporary capital of Aden after a distinguished career spanning more than five decades in literature, theater, and journalism.
Awlaqi is regarded as one of the foremost pioneers of Yemen’s cultural and theatrical movement. He helped establish several theater institutions that became the foundation of modern Yemeni theater, including the South Theater Troupe in 1965 and the Modern Theater in 1969.
Throughout his career, the late writer held a number of cultural and administrative positions, most notably serving as head of the Aden branch of the Yemeni Writers and Authors Union and as director of the General Corporation for Theater and Cinema. He played an important role in supporting and developing cultural and artistic activities.
Awlaqi left behind a substantial literary and theatrical legacy that includes creative works, studies, and numerous articles. His play “Al-Tirka” (The Inheritance) is considered one of his most notable works and achieved significant recognition within Yemen’s theatrical scene.
He is widely regarded as one of the founders of modern Yemeni theater due to his major contributions to establishing theatrical culture and strengthening the country’s literary and artistic movements.
