The assassination case of former Director of the Cleaning and Improvement Fund in Taiz, Iftahan Al-Mashhari, has returned to public attention eight months after the incident, following the publication of a document showing that the Public Prosecution has formally charged 13 individuals, specifying their alleged criminal roles ranging from direct participation and incitement to concealment of suspects.
The document contains the prosecution’s indictment against the remaining defendants in Taiz, southwestern Yemen, after the individual described as the primary suspect in the assassination, Mohammed Sadiq, was killed during a security pursuit following the incident.
According to the document, nine defendants are being held in pretrial detention, while four others remain fugitives from justice, including one accused of direct participation in the killing and another accused of incitement.
According to the indictment, the alleged roles and legal status of the 13 defendants are as follows:
Individuals Accused of Direct Participation in the Assassination (3)
- Mohammed Marsh Al-Odaini — Held in pretrial detention.
- Tamer Murad Al-Mekhlafi — Held in pretrial detention.
- Mazen Hamoud Qaed — Fugitive.
Individuals Accused of Incitement (4)
- Bakr Sadiq Sarhan — Held in pretrial detention.
- Jassar Al-Mekhlafi — Held in pretrial detention.
- Jihad Abdulwahid Al-Mekhlafi — Held in pretrial detention.
- Muadh Marsh Al-Mekhlafi — Fugitive.
Accused of Providing Means for the Crime (1)
- Ghazi Muadh Al-Mekhlafi — Accused of supplying the perpetrators with a motorcycle allegedly used in the operation; currently a fugitive.
Accused of Resisting Authorities and Attacking the Security Operation (3)
The following individuals are accused of threatening and attacking a security force attempting to arrest the main suspect. All are being held in pretrial detention:
- Mohammed Saeed Qasim Al-Mekhlafi
- Issam Abdullah Al-Mekhlafi
- Arafat Qaed Al-Mekhlafi
Accused of Incitement to Rebellion and Harboring Suspects (2)
- Sadiq Ahmed Qasim Al-Mekhlafi — Accused of encouraging Jassar Al-Mekhlafi to refuse to leave government buildings that they allegedly occupied.
- Abdulwahab Mahmoud Al-Mahmoudi — Accused of concealing Tamer Murad Al-Mekhlafi, who is alleged to have participated in the crime.
The details of the indictment, dated April 30, were disclosed as the court set July 20 as the date for the second hearing in the case, continuing proceedings nearly eight months after the assassination in September 2025.
Security authorities in Taiz announced in late March that they had arrested the individual identified as the second most-wanted suspect in Al-Mashhari’s killing.
The assassination of local official Iftahan Al-Mashhari sparked widespread outrage in Taiz, leading to open-ended public sit-ins that continued for more than three months, demanding the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
