UNMHA Ends Its Mission… 7 Years Of The UN Mission In Hudaidah

The United Nations Mission to Support the Hudaidah Agreement (UNMHA) announced on Tuesday that it has concluded its operations, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2813 issued on January 27, 2026.

The mission said on its official website that it held online consultations with the Yemeni government delegation in the Redeployment Coordination Committee on March 26, 2026, to discuss remaining tasks and arrangements for the transitional phase to the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy.

The mission and the Office of the UN Envoy reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to continuing support for the implementation of the Hudaidah Agreement, stressing the importance of ongoing communication and cooperation to support stability in Hudaidah and Yemen.

The mission officially announced the end of its work and the transfer of its remaining responsibilities to the Office of the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General to Yemen (OSESGY).

The UN Security Council had unanimously adopted Resolution 2452 on January 16, 2019, establishing the United Nations Mission to Support Hudaidah Agreement (UNMHA), as stipulated in the Stockholm Agreement signed between the Yemeni government and the Houthi group on December 13, 2018.

From 6 months to 9 extensions… How long was its mandate extended?

When UNMHA was established on January 16, 2019, the Security Council granted it an initial mandate of 6 months, which was later extended through 9 renewal decisions.

  • On July 15, 2019, the Security Council adopted a resolution extending the mission for an additional 6 months (until January 15, 2020).
  • On January 13, 2020, the Council unanimously renewed the mandate for another 6 months (until July 15, 2020).
  • On July 14, 2020, Resolution 2534 extended the mandate for one year until July 15, 2021.
  • On July 14, 2021, Resolution 2586 renewed the mandate until July 15, 2022.

The Council continued extending the mission’s work through five additional resolutions, bringing the total to nine extensions:

  • On July 13, 2022, Resolution 2643 (2022) extended the mandate for one year until July 14, 2023.
  • On July 10, 2023, the mandate was extended for one year until July 14, 2024.
  • On July 8, 2024, Resolution 2742 extended the mission for 12 months until July 14, 2025.
  • On July 14, 2025, Resolution 2786 extended the mandate until January 28, 2026.
  • On January 27, 2026, with 13 votes in favor and abstentions by Russia and China, Resolution 2813 was adopted as the final extension, ending the mission’s mandate on March 31, 2026.
