Al-Sarari: Continued Kidnapping of Rights Lawyer Abdul-Majid Sabra is a “Message of Intimidation” and “Unacceptable Blackmail”

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Prominent human rights activist and lawyer Huda Al-Sarari condemned on Sunday the Houthi group’s continued kidnapping of lawyer Abdul-Majid Sabra since September 25, 2025. She described the incident as a “direct targeting of every voice defending rights and freedoms in Yemen.”

In a post on her X (formerly Twitter) account, Al-Sarari emphasized that Sabra is one of the most prominent lawyers defending prisoners of conscience. She noted that his detention serves as a clear message of intimidation to anyone seeking justice or supporting victims behind bars.

Al-Sarari revealed “serious” details regarding his detention conditions, stating that the Houthi militia has set arbitrary conditions for his release. These include a total withdrawal from following the files of detainees and the forcibly disappeared, and ceasing his legal role in defending victims of violations.

Al-Sarari characterized this trade-off as “unacceptable blackmail” that reflects the group’s explicit hostility toward international law and a direct assault on the “right to defense” guaranteed by all international charters and norms.

The kidnapping of lawyer Sabra comes amid escalating crackdowns on legal and human rights personnel in Houthi-controlled areas, sparked by local and international demands for his immediate and unconditional release and an end to the policy of intimidating lawyers.
