Prime Minister Confirms Stability of Services in Socotra; Electricity Issue to be Addressed with Saudi Support

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Prime Minister Salem bin Bureik affirmed that the government is monitoring the situation in the Socotra Archipelago with high interest and responsibility. He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing petroleum products and domestic gas, ensuring they reach citizens without manipulation or exploitation.

Bin Bureik stated that the government is working in coordination with the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) to support electricity generation and ensure the continued operation of the hospital. He described the program as a key partner in supporting stability and improving basic services to ease the burden on citizens.

In the same context, the Socotra Archipelago today witnessed the completion of the handover procedures for the electricity sector. Management of the sector, which was previously handled by an Emirati company, has been transferred to other entities that will now take over the support and management of all services in the archipelago.

For his part, the Governor of Socotra, Raafat al-Thaqali, explained in a post on his Facebook page that these steps come under direct directives from the Prime Minister and as part of ongoing follow-up and coordination. He confirmed that efforts continue to support the health, electricity, education, and water sectors.

Al-Thaqali noted that the SDRPY is overseeing and supporting various service sectors, including the provision of fuel derivatives, to ensure the stability and continuity of services. He stressed that the needs of Socotra’s citizens are at the forefront of the leadership’s and government’s priorities.

This follows a directive from the Presidential Leadership Council during its meeting today to provide for the needs and services of the Socotra Archipelago, filling the vacuum left by the withdrawal of the UAE, which previously controlled the island.
