Al-Mahrah Security Apprehends Suspect in Extortion and Fraud Case, Affirming Continued Crackdown on Cybercrimes

Security forces in Al-Mahrah Governorate, eastern Yemen, announced the arrest of a suspect in an extortion and fraud case, following investigation and tracking operations carried out by the Cybercrime Section of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), in coordination with the Al-Ghaydah District Security Department.

In a statement, the security forces said that preliminary investigations indicate the suspect’s involvement in exploiting a woman and extorting her psychologically and financially, seizing sums of money and gold jewelry from her, before using what was in his possession in attempts to entrap other victims, including businessmen, with the aim of achieving illicit gains.

They added that the victim was subjected to continuous pressure and threats that led to a sharp deterioration in her psychological condition, and she was on the verge of harming herself before the security forces intervened and initiated their procedures, which contributed to containing the situation and ending her suffering.

A source in the Criminal Investigation Department confirmed that the case is still undergoing legal procedures by the competent authorities, noting the completion of gathering evidence in preparation for referring it to the Public Prosecution in accordance with applicable legal procedures.

The Criminal Investigation Department and the Cybercrime Section in Al-Mahrah Governorate emphasized that efforts will continue to pursue cases of cyber extortion and fraud, asserting that legal measures will reach anyone proven to be involved in such crimes.
