20 Soldiers from the STC Forces Killed and Injured in Suicide Bombing in Abyan

Five soldiers were killed and fifteen others were wounded from the First Support and Reinforcement Brigade affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council (STC), following a suicide bombing and clashes with gunmen believed to be affiliated with Al-Qaeda in the center of Al-Mahfed district, Abyan province (southern Yemen).
Military sources told Yemen Monitor that the operation began at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday when a car bomb advanced and exploded in front of the gate of the government complex in Al-Mahfed district, which serves as the headquarters of the First Support and Reinforcement Brigade of the STC.
The sources added that the explosion was followed by a group of gunmen wearing uniforms similar to those of the STC brigade infiltrating the government compound and engaging in clashes with the brigade’s forces. The attack resulted in 5 soldiers killed and 15 wounded, while 5 Al-Qaeda members wearing explosive belts were also killed.
Al-Qaeda has not yet officially claimed responsibility for the attack.
