Total Power Outage in Aden as Fuel Supplies Run Out

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

The temporary capital of Yemen, Aden, experienced a complete power outage on Monday afternoon after all electricity generation plants went offline, in a new crisis that has worsened residents’ suffering amid a heatwave pushing temperatures above 38°C (100°F).

Sources at the Aden Electricity Corporation said that the blackout had lasted 24 consecutive hours due to the depletion of fuel allocated for power generation. They warned that the ongoing shortage could paralyze vital sectors such as hospitals, water services, ports, airports, and telecommunications, potentially leading to a humanitarian disaster.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the General Electricity Corporation in Aden urged both the Presidential Leadership Council and the Prime Minister’s Office to intervene urgently and provide the necessary fuel to keep power stations running, warning that the city could soon be plunged into “total darkness.”

The corporation explained that all power stations had completely shut down, except for the Presidential Power Plant, which is operating at limited partial capacity. However, it cautioned that this remaining plant might also stop completely by tonight if fuel supplies are not replenished.

The statement added that the turbine at the Presidential Plant requires seven fuel tankers per day to maintain minimum generation levels. Currently, only four tankers arrive from Al-Dhabbah Port, which is insufficient after the Safer and Al-Oqla companies halted fuel deliveries — despite strict government directives ordering the continuation of supplies.
