Rise in Cholera Cases in Taiz Due to Garbage Pileup and Sanitation Workers’ Strike

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
Taiz Governorate has recorded 86 cases of cholera and acute watery diarrhea within 48 hours, coinciding with the continued accumulation of garbage in the streets as a result of a sanitation workers’ strike.
Tayseer Al-Samie, Media Officer at the Ministry of Health office in Taiz, confirmed the registration of these critical health cases, warning that the situation could worsen if garbage continues to pile up without a swift solution.
This health crisis follows the assassination of sanitation department director Iftihan Al-Mashhari a few days ago, which triggered the strike in protest of the incident. The strike has led to the suspension of waste collection operations and worsening environmental pollution in the city.
Al-Samie appealed to the relevant authorities and the local government to urgently intervene to resolve the garbage crisis, which poses a direct threat to public health.
Garbage accumulation is a major risk factor in the spread of epidemic diseases such as cholera, especially amid weak health infrastructure and the prevalence of outbreaks in affected areas.
These health developments underline the urgent need for immediate action to prevent the spread of disease and ensure a safe, healthy environment for Taiz residents, according to Ministry of Health reports and local sources.
