The International Federation of Journalists Condemns the Killing of 9 Journalists in Yemen by Israeli Airstrikes

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

Anthony Bellanger, the General Secretary of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), described the killing of at least nine journalists in Yemen as a “horrific massacre.” He added that targeting journalists is a grave violation of international law and an assault on the public’s right to know.

On September 10, Israeli airstrikes attacked Sana’a, the Yemeni capital, and Al Jawf governorate, targeting the offices of the September 26th newspaper. The attack resulted in the death and injury of several journalists and passersby.

The newspaper is affiliated with the Houthi group in Sana’a and employs both military and civilian journalists.

The Israeli Defense Forces announced that they had targeted “military targets belonging to the terrorist Houthi group” in Sana’a and Al Jawf, including military camps, a fuel storage facility, and the Houthi Public Relations Department.

For its part, the Houthi-affiliated Ministry of Health stated that the airstrikes killed 35 people and injured 131 others.

The Youth Journalists Syndicate acknowledged that many civilian journalists with no military affiliation were among the victims of the attack.

According to the IFJ, those killed were: Abdulaziz Al Sheikh, Abbas Al-Dailami, Yousef Shams El-Din Al-Bahri, Mohamed Al-Omisi, Abdullah Al-Harazi, Murad Al-Faqih, Ali Naji Al-Shara’i, Ali Mohamed Al-Aqel, and Jamal Al-Adhi. Several journalists were also reported injured, including Mansour Al-Ansi.

The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate condemned the incident, describing it as a “war crime and a blatant violation of the legal mechanisms that protect journalists and media outlets during wartime.”
