U.S. Slaps Houthis with Largest Sanctions Package, Targeting 32 Individuals, Firms, and Ships

Yemen Monitor – Newsroom :

The U.S. on Thursday imposed its largest-ever sanctions package against Yemen’s Houthi movement, in what the Trump administration described as a sweeping effort to disrupt the group’s finances, smuggling networks, and military operations.

The Treasury Department said the measures target 32 individuals and entities, along with four vessels. Those sanctioned include several Chinese companies accused of supplying military components, as well as other firms allegedly arranging shipments of dual-use goods to the Houthis. Oil smugglers and shipping companies linked to the group were also blacklisted.

Since late 2023, the Iran-aligned Houthis have carried out hundreds of drone and missile strikes on commercial vessels in the Red Sea, saying they were targeting ships connected to Israel in solidarity with Palestinians during Israel’s war in Gaza. The attacks have severely disrupted global trade along one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

Thursday’s announcement follows a surprise ceasefire deal announced by former President Donald Trump in May between U.S. forces and the Houthis, though hostilities in the region have continued.
