The Fisheries Sector in Socotra Discusses Combating Smuggling and Random Fishing with Al-Mahra Authorities

Al-Mahra Governorate on Wednesday hosted a meeting that brought together its governor, Mohammed Ali Yasser, and the fisheries sector committee of Socotra, headed by the chairman of the Fisheries Authority, Ahmed Ali Otman, as part of a tour that also includes Aden and Hadramawt.

The two sides discussed the challenges facing fishery resources, foremost among them the growing problem of overfishing in Socotra, as well as the smuggling of fish through seaports by illegal means. The meeting also touched on ways to strengthen cooperation between fisheries authorities in coastal governorates and to coordinate with security agencies to curb violations and protect fish stocks.

Governor bin Yasser emphasized the historical ties between Al-Mahra and Socotra, stressing the importance of enhancing cooperation to protect fisheries and regulate seaport operations in a way that ensures better living standards for fishermen and supports food security.

For his part, the head of the Socotra committee conveyed the greetings of the island’s governor, appreciating the cooperation of the local authority in Al-Mahra and the support it provides in facilitating the committee’s work.
