Marib’s Education Office Resolves Controversy, Caps School Fees

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:

On Monday, the Education and Technical Training Office in Marib governorate took a decisive step against the chaos of tuition fees in private schools by issuing a new directive that sets a maximum limit for fees by category. This move puts an end to attempts by some schools to circumvent recent fee reduction decisions.

According to the new directive, fees for the preparatory stage in Category B schools are capped at 200,000 Yemeni riyals, fees for the first three grades at 360,000 riyals, and up to 495,000 riyals for the third year of high school.

This action comes after some schools resorted to exorbitantly raising their fees, then pretending to reduce them to circumvent the ministry’s decision to lower fees by 30% due to the improved exchange rate.

Some schools had imposed fees as high as 480,000 riyals for the early grades, then announced an increase to 530,000 riyals before a superficial reduction to 370,000 riyals in an attempt to show a fake commitment to the fee reduction decision.

The Education Office confirmed that this new directive aims to regulate the educational process and ensure fair fees among schools, which will ease the burden on parents and protect students’ right to education.
