Hadramout Governor’s Decision to Change Al-Abr Management Sparks Conflict

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

A dispute has erupted between the governor of Hadramout, Mabkhout bin Madi, and the Hadramout Inclusive Conference (HIC) after the governor appointed a new director for the Al-Abr district. The move has been condemned by the HIC as a “dangerous and unjustified escalation.”

In a statement, the HIC said that any attempts to dismiss or pressure its local leaders are a “direct violation of the legitimate rights of the Hadramout people and an adoption of a completely rejected policy.” The group stressed that targeting the current director, Sheikh Salem bin Mubarak Al-Sai’ari, is seen as an attempt to weaken the national stance and impose a rejected reality on the people of the governorate.

The statement added that this action is part of “repeated attempts to target the leaders of the Hadramout Tribal Alliance and the Hadramout Inclusive Conference.” It affirmed that these stances are not personal but reflect a “collective will” that will not be broken, and will instead strengthen the resolve of the Hadrami people to protect their rights and gains.

This decision comes amid growing tensions between the local authorities and Hadramout’s political and tribal groups. The conflict is fueled by mutual accusations of corruption, tribal and political rivalries, and the influence of regional powers. This includes pressure from the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), which seeks to assert its control over Hadramout, while local groups demand self-rule.
