Protests Erupt in Wadi Hadramout Demanding Governor’s Departure

Yemen Monitor/Newsroom:
Seiyun, the largest city in Wadi Hadramout, witnessed angry popular demonstrations on Tuesday, protesting the deteriorating living conditions and the collapse of basic services in the governorate.
Eyewitnesses reported that protesters blocked several main streets and burned tires to express their anger over the worsening situation. They demanded the departure of Governor Mabkhout bin Madhi and the accountability of those they described as corrupt officials within the local authority.

Participants in the demonstrations chanted slogans affirming that “Wadi Hadramout will not be silent any longer,” calling for urgent intervention to end the ongoing suffering and provide the most basic necessities of life, including electricity, water, and health services.
Yesterday, Monday, popular protests erupted in Mukalla, the capital of Hadramout, condemning the deteriorating living and service conditions, including electricity outages and the unprecedented collapse of the local currency’s value.
Protesters stormed the local authority building in Mukalla after gathering in and blocking some of the coastal city’s streets. Chanting angry slogans against the governor of Hadramout, the protesters also set tires on fire in Mukalla’s streets.
These protests were sparked by the continuous electricity outages amid accusations that local authorities in the oil-rich governorate are tampering with and wasting its financial resources.
The protests also followed days after a parliamentary committee formed by the Yemeni Parliament to investigate the financial and administrative activities of the local authority in Hadramout and to examine oil-related irregularities was prevented from carrying out its work. The committee was reportedly besieged at its residence in the Nesto Hotel in the coastal city of Mukalla on the Arabian Sea.
