Yemeni Officer Dies from Wounds Sustained During Houthi Leader’s Arrest in Al-Mahra

Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:

Colonel Yahya Al-Washli, a Yemeni army officer, passed away on Thursday morning from injuries he sustained in an armed ambush that targeted a military convoy in Al-Mahra governorate last week.

Local sources reported that Colonel Al-Washli, who served as the Chief of Staff of the Infantry Battalion in the Al-Ghaydah axis, had been transferred to a hospital in the governorate for treatment after being wounded in the attack. However, his health deteriorated, and he died after several days of receiving medical care.

Al-Washli’s death raises the toll from the attack to two officers. Brigadier General Abdullah Zayed, commander of the Tank Battalion in the same axis, was killed immediately during the armed assault, while a third officer is still receiving medical treatment under supervision.

The targeted force was part of a military convoy belonging to the Al-Ghaydah axis, on an official mission to take custody of tribal sheikh Mohammed Al-Zaidi, who is close to the Houthi group, after his arrest at the Sarfait border crossing with Oman on July 8.

According to sources, the convoy was subjected to a sudden attack by gunmen suspected of belonging to the Houthi group. The operation has drawn widespread condemnation and demands for accountability for those involved, as well as calls to enhance security measures to protect regular forces operating in the governorate.
