Yemen and Japan Discuss Strengthening Security Cooperation and Capacity Building

Yemeni Minister of Interior, Major General Ibrahim Haidan, met today with Japan’s Ambassador to Yemen, Yoichi Nakashima, and the Director of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Yu Ebisawa, to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in security-related fields and expand technical and institutional support programs.
During the meeting, held at the Ministry of Interior headquarters in the temporary capital, Aden, the two sides reviewed existing areas of cooperation between the ministry and the Japanese side, as well as opportunities to expand them in support of efforts to enhance security, stability, and the capacity of security institutions.
The Interior Minister praised the support provided by the Japanese government to the Ministry of Interior and the Coast Guard Authority, emphasizing the importance of the partnership with Japan in improving security and institutional performance, particularly in the areas of forensic evidence, qualification and training programs, and enhancing the efficiency of security personnel.
Haidan also highlighted the key achievements made by security agencies in the liberated governorates, along with measures taken to improve institutional performance and address shortcomings within the Coast Guard Authority. These efforts aim to strengthen its ability to protect coastlines and territorial waters and combat smuggling and organized crime.
For his part, the Japanese Ambassador reaffirmed his country’s continued support for Yemen and its commitment to enhancing cooperation with the Ministry of Interior. He also praised the ministry’s efforts in implementing the biometric national ID card project, describing it as an important step toward improving identity verification and documentation systems.
Meanwhile, the Director of JICA reviewed the agency’s ongoing programs and projects in Yemen and discussed with ministry officials ways to utilize them in developing institutional infrastructure and strengthening technical and security capabilities.
