A picnic following a wedding celebration turned into a painful tragedy after three girls drowned in a deep water pool in Wadi al-Awar, located in the Al-Alqama sub-district of Ash-Shamayatayn District, south of Taiz Governorate (southwestern Yemen).
Local sources told “Yemen Monitor” that the girls had participated in a wedding ceremony in a neighboring village before heading out for a picnic in the Wadi al-Awar area, where one of the girls slipped and fell into a deep water pool while they were walking around the valley.
The sources added that the other two girls rushed to try to save their friend, but they fell into the pool in turn, ending the tragic attempt with the death of all three girls by drowning.
The sources stated that the victims are: Sina Muhammad Hassan Al-Awaji, Abrar Saif Ali Muhammad Saif, and Da’wa Abdullah Ali Al-Aql.
The incident sparked a state of grief and sorrow among the residents of the area, who widely shared the details of the tragedy, expressing their sympathy with the families of the victims.
Wadi al-Awar is one of the well-known natural areas in Ash-Shamayatayn District and contains a number of water pools formed by rain and torrents. Meanwhile, calls are renewed from time to time to take preventative measures and place warning signs to reduce drowning incidents that repeatedly occur in some open water sites.
