Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
The Chairman of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, received the government negotiating team responsible for the detainee file, led by Hadi Haig, on Monday to review the outcomes of the latest round of negotiations held in the Jordanian capital, Amman, under UN auspices.
Al-Alimi listened to a briefing from the government delegation regarding the agreement that led to the release of 1,750 detainees and abductees. He welcomed this humanitarian agreement, congratulating the families of detainees and missing persons on this step, which he described as a “humanitarian and national priority.”
The Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council reiterated the special importance that the team must place on verifying the condition of prominent political figure Mohammed Qahtan, affirming that his case represents a “top state priority” and the implementation of Security Council resolutions stipulating his immediate and unconditional release.
He also affirmed the Council and government’s commitment to moving forward towards fully closing this file, working to “zero out” the file of detainees and forcibly disappeared persons in various regions of the country, ultimately achieving the complete release of everyone according to the “all for all” principle.
Al-Alimi stressed the need to accelerate the implementation of the agreement according to the agreed mechanisms and timelines, to ensure no further suffering for the families and to prevent any obstacles to this achievement, noting that success on the humanitarian track builds confidence for making progress on other files.
The meeting also touched on the file of relief workers and employees of humanitarian organizations and the UN arbitrarily detained by the Houthi group. Al-Alimi affirmed that this file is a top priority for the state, urging the government team to continue raising it across various tracks and communications, in coordination with international partners, to secure their immediate release.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council praised the fraternal role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its continuous support in reaching this achievement. He also commended the efforts of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for hosting the consultation round, and the role of the Sultanate of Oman in hosting the preliminary stages.
Al-Alimi expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the UN Special Envoy’s office to Yemen, the Supervisory Committee, and the professional and humanitarian role of the International Committee of the Red Cross as a key partner in completing this file.
