STC Calls for Protests in Aden Ignore Warnings Against Dragging the City into Chaos
Yemen Monitor / Newsroom:
Calls from the (dissolved) Southern Transitional Council (STC) to mobilize next Wednesday in Aden have continued, despite warnings from official authorities against dragging the city toward chaos.
Previous events called for by the STC ended in bloody clashes between the army, security forces, and STC supporters in Shabwa, Aden, and Seiyun, resulting in deaths and injuries as protesters rushed to storm official headquarters.
Anwar al-Halmi, described by STC media as the acting Secretary-General, posted on his Facebook account calling for a mobilization next Wednesday in front of the General Assembly headquarters in the Tawahi district of the capital, Aden, to protest what he described as the closure of its offices. Al-Halmi indicated that the demonstration gathering in Tawahi would expand to what he called “all council headquarters closed by force majeure.”
In a related context, the so-called Media Authority of the dissolved STC called on media outlets, content creators, influencers, and activists to cover what it termed a “popular mobilization” in front of the General Assembly headquarters on Wednesday morning.
Yesterday, Aden authorities issued a statement saying that the information contained in the “alleged statement” attributed to the so-called “dissolved STC” consists of baseless claims aimed at deception and destabilizing the city.
In its statement responding to the “dissolved STC,” Aden authorities warned against attempts to drag Aden back into a cycle of chaos and threaten social peace. They stated that these allegations come at a time when “official efforts are uniting to enhance security, activate state institutions, and consolidate the foundations of stability.”
