Cement Traders in Houthi-Controlled Areas Announce “Strike”

Yemen Monitor / Exclusive:

Cement traders and importers have launched an open-ended strike in areas under the control of the Houthi group, protesting a decision to increase customs duties.

Local sources reported that traders and distributors of local cement began their strike at Dhamar Customs point. The protest is in response to the Houthis raising customs fees from 480 riyals to 690 riyals per 50kg bag.

According to a statement issued by the cement traders, the fee hike represents an additional burden that exceeds the purchasing power of citizens. They argued that the decision fails to account for the current economic conditions and the stagnation facing the construction sector. The statement described the decision as sudden, unjustified, and lacking clear legal and economic foundations.

The traders affirmed their categorical rejection of the increased duties, warning of catastrophic consequences. They noted that these measures damage a vital sector that directly impacts the lives of citizens.

The statement called on the Houthi group to immediately suspend the decision and open a serious dialogue with agents and relevant stakeholders to reach fair solutions that ensure price stability and encourage the building and reconstruction process.
