Calm Returns to Western Taiz as Forces Redeploy Following Tribal Tensions

Yemen Monitor / Taiz / Exclusive:

Stability has returned to the Al-Wazi’iyah Directorate in western Taiz after forces loyal to Tariq Saleh withdrew from residential areas on Saturday, ending a tense standoff with local tribesmen.

According to sources speaking to Yemen Monitor, the forces—previously engaged in a security campaign—have vacated their positions near villages and neighborhoods, redeploying to the district center. The move comes in response to high-level official and community interventions aimed at de-escalating the situation and protecting civilians.

De-escalation and Security Measures Witnesses confirmed that the withdrawal of troops from the vicinity of local homes has immediately restored public tranquility. Community leaders and notables in Al-Wazi’iyah were credited with playing a pivotal role in mediating the dispute and stabilizing the district, which had been peaceful prior to the recent security campaign.

Regarding the individuals labeled as “wanted” by security forces, sources emphasized that the file has been transferred exclusively to judicial and security channels.

“The issue will be handled according to legal procedures to avoid militarizing residential areas,” a source stated. While no arrests have been reported as of Saturday, understandings have been reached through tribal mediator Sheikh Abdu Al-Shukri to facilitate the surrender of suspects without bloodshed.

Official Confirmation Official sources confirmed that the redeployment orders came via direct instructions from relevant leadership. The directive prioritizes the safety of civilians and mandates that the pursuit of suspects be conducted through organized, legal means rather than armed confrontation in populated zones.

Context of the Conflict The de-escalation follows armed clashes that erupted on Friday between tribal fighters and forces affiliated with Tariq Saleh, the nephew of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The violence was reportedly triggered by a dispute over a humanitarian organization’s operations, specifically accusations of unfair registration practices for aid beneficiaries. Local sources reported that tribal fighters had seized control of the strategic “Al-Rawajil” heights overlooking the district center and downed a surveillance drone during the fighting.

Strategic Significance Al-Wazi’iyah holds critical strategic importance due to its location in southwestern Taiz, close to the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a vital international shipping lane. The district has seen recurring friction between local tribes and UAE-backed forces, stemming from long-standing disagreements over local administration and security control.
